Terms

Terms for venues: chat, family sessions and games.

These terms cover the features of Pub Quiz Host that involve your players talking to each other, children, or money. The price, billing and cancelling of your subscription are on the pricing page. Players have their own terms at mbquizzes.com.

1. Who we are

Pub Quiz Host is run by MBQUIZZES LTD (trading as MB Quizzes) ("we", "us"), registered in England and Wales, company number 12899334. "You" is the pub, club or other venue that holds the account, and "your organiser" is whoever runs your quiz night with the organiser link.

2. The venue chat

Each night can have one chat room for the people at your quiz. It is text only, up to 200 characters a message, with no pictures, links or private messages, and we filter what is posted. It is open in the lobby and between rounds, and closed while a question is on.

You run the room. The chat is off for every night until your organiser switches it on, after reading the guidance shown when they do. You are responsible for keeping an eye on it during the night. Your organiser can hide a message, clear the room, mute a device or a team, and switch the chat off at any time.

Reports. Any player can report a message. When three different players report the same message it is hidden without anyone doing anything, and we are emailed about it. We can look at any room, hide or restore a message, and switch a room off. If we switch a room off, your organiser cannot switch it back on.

Keeping messages. Messages are deleted after 7 days. If a message is serious we may keep a copy for longer, as the privacy notice says.

Not for family sessions. The chat is never available in a family session. If children may be playing, do not switch it on.

3. Family sessions

A family session is a night where children may be playing, for example a family quiz at a holiday park or an early evening quiz. You choose whether your nights are family sessions by default, and you can change it for a single night before the night is made. If you do not tick it, we treat the night as an adult night. It is your responsibility to mark nights correctly.

In a family session there are no paid games, no chat and no linked nights, and nothing on the screen mentions money.

4. The free break game

After round 2 of a night of four or more rounds, the host can run a break game: ten questions on the phones, the same ten for everyone in the room, one go each, ranked by the number right and then by the quickest total time. It is a game of skill. Nothing in it is decided by chance. The free break game is on by default and you can turn it off.

Your prize line. You can offer a prize of your own to the winning team, for example "A meal for two". It is your prize, and you are the one who gives it. We do not promise it or pay for it. We do not accept prize lines that mention drink, and a prize line that mentions money is printed on your posters but left off the quiz screen.

5. The paid break game

You can choose a paid break game instead of a free one, with an entry of between £1.00 and £2.00 that you set. It is available only to pubs in England, Scotland and Wales, and never in a family session. You must tell us truthfully which country your pub is in.

To enter, a player needs a free MB Quizzes account, must be aged 18 or over, and pays through MB Quizzes, by card or from their Prize Balance. Your pub does not take any money for the game, at the bar or anywhere else. One entry per player per night.

We pay 70% of the entries for the night as prizes: 60% of that to first place, 30% to second and 10% to third. Prizes go to the winners' Prize Balance. We keep the other 30% to run the game. At the moment your pub does not receive a share of the entries. If fewer than five people enter, every entry is refunded. If we cannot confirm a result is fair we may remove it and refund the entry.

6. Linked nights and the national skill competition

On a linked night, pubs across Great Britain play the same themed quiz at the same time. You can join one when we offer it, or with a code we give you. Once you have joined, your night follows the linked night's start time and clock, so it cannot be started early or paused. A linked night is a team night. The other pubs see only your pub's name and your teams' names.

Linked nights are free to play unless we say otherwise. On some linked nights players can also enter a national skill competition on their phones. It is a game of skill and has the same rules as the paid break game: 18 and over, a free MB Quizzes account, England, Scotland and Wales only, never in a family session, and 70% of entries paid out as prizes to the top three players across every pub, shared 60%, 30% and 10%. The entry is shown on the entry page. If too few people enter, every entry is refunded. At the moment your pub does not receive a share of the entries.

Any prize you offer your own winning team on a linked night is yours, and the same rules on your prize line apply.

7. What we ask of you

  1. Tell us the true country of your pub, and keep it up to date.
  2. Mark family sessions, and do not switch the chat on where children may be playing.
  3. Do not take money for, or promise prizes for, any game on our platform, and do not link entry or prizes to buying or drinking.
  4. Look at the chat room while it is open, and act on reports.
  5. Keep to your own licence and the law about prizes and children. We do not allow drink in a prize line, but the rest is yours to check.

8. Changes and switching off

We can switch off any feature for one pub, for one night or for everyone, for example if we think a game is not fair or a room is not being looked after. A paid entry for a game that does not run is refunded. We will tell you before we change these terms, and the changes apply to nights after the date we give.
